Transmitter
A Transmitter is used to control the yacht from the shore. Typically most classes only use a two channel control system. 1 channel is used to drive the winch whilst the other is used to control the rudder.
Transmitters typically broadcast on an FM frequency in either the 27Mhz or the 40Mhz range - channels are interchangeable via crystals which are changed in the transmitter and the receiver.
A new technology called Spread Spectrum is becoming more popular. It operates on the 2.4Ghz range and there are numerous advantages;
- No Crystals required, a transmitter/receiver are bound to each other, similar to bluetooth systems
- No risk of interference between models
- 2.4Ghz can be used on surface and in the air - air models use 35Mhz
Winch
A winch is used to position the sails. Some of the smaller yachts use a servo in place of winch with an arm on.
Rudder Servo
A servo is used to control the rudder. It takes the movement of the rudder stick on the transmitter and converts it into a rotational movement which moves the servo arm which is the connected to the rudder.
